C19check launches to reduce hospital overcrowding

Health DesignED, the new Acute Care Design + Innovation Center in the Department of Emergency Medicine at Emory University, and the Emory Office of Critical Event Preparedness and Response has partnered with the medical software start-up Vital to launch c19check.com, a global virtual triage website for COVID-19. Leveraging the expertise of Emory’s emergency physicians on the frontline of the COVID-19 pandemic, public health experts, and Vital’s technological expertise, the site helps people determine the care they need based on their symptoms. With the number of infectious cases on the rise, likely outpacing the capacity of healthcare systems globally, this solution helps individuals and caregivers make wise decisions about when, how, and where they seek care. The website will be managed by Vital and Emory’s Emergency Medicine team as they stay current with COVID-19 recommendations and updates.

With the website c19check.com, Dr. Justin Schrager, Attending Emergency Physician at Emory University Hospital and Chief Medical Officer of Vital, has been leading the digital response to this pandemic with co-founder Aaron Patzer. Schrager has now created a bridge between the clinical and epidemiological expertise of Emory emergency physicians and the technological know-how of Vital. Recognizing that triage should be easy to access, Schrager along with his colleagues Drs. Anna Yaffe, Alex Isakov, and David Wright has helped shape the development of a website that provides simple recommendations based on a user’s profile including age, symptoms, risk factors, and location. This enables tailored recommendations for care based on risk while providing information on how to prevent viral spread and practice self- care. Users are invited to stay connected with daily re-assessments and screenings for worsening symptoms.

“The depth of intellectual resources in Emory’s Department of Emergency Medicine are unparalleled,” said Dr. Monique Smith, Medical Director of Emory’s Health DesignED. “The EM team includes the digital health expertise of Dr. Justin Schrager, the epidemiological prowess of Dr. Anne Yaffee, the critical event response know-how of Dr. Alexander Isakov, Director of the Emory Office of Critical Event Preparedness and Response, and the leadership of Dr. David Wright, Chair of Emergency Medicine” continued Smith. Wright, further comments, “The Center, Health DesignED, was created to bridge silos, foster collaborations, and define the frontier of high-quality acute care that is effortless and equitable. It is a conduit to achieve our vision to lead the future of Emergency Medicine.”

Emory’s Department of Emergency Medicine was founded in 1975. The department includes the newly launched Health DesignED and four patient care centers: Emory University Hospital, Emory University Midtown, Emory Johns Creek Hospital, and the Grady Health Emergency Care Center. Together, their mission is to deliver exceptional prehospital and emergency care, advance groundbreaking science through translational and public health research, accelerate innovation, and provide an unmatched education to a diverse group of trainees and communities.
